BEARFIELD TWP, OH — I have already shared my favorite fishing trip recipe of Campfire Stew. With deer season already in progress in Ohio, it’s time to share my number one choices of vittles after a long day of deer hunting. I call it Davy Crockett Chicken (Davy Crockett Chicken) for no apparent reason other than a chicken is involved.
The cooking tool is one of my favorite appliances… the versatile crock pot… and perfectly named for creating Davy Crockett Chicken. This is a throw it in the crock and then hit the woods deal for me. No turning or flipping involved. You don’t even have to stir it!
Chicken thighs or legs work best for me. Taters, zucchinis, broccoli, as much of an onion you care to use, a half stick of butter salt, a small can of peas, and a small can of sweet corn are the chunky ingredients. Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are the sprinkly things for seasoning with Campbell’s cream of chicken soup for one more flavor enhancer. On my recent batch of this concoction, I added another flavor enhancer in the form of chicken broth, about a half cup. There’s the lineup. Here’s how many you put in the game (crock pot):
4-6 pieces of chicken
6 small red potatoes or 4 a bit bigger white potatoes chopped into chunks
2 zucchinis, sliced
1 small onion
5 or 6 small clumps of broccoli (chopped up)
½ cup or slightly less of chicken broth
Now here’s the most important part of Davy Crockett Chicken. TURN ON THE CROCK POT! Without this key step, your Davy Crockett Chicken will be Doug Clifford Mess after sitting on the kitchen counter for six hours.
Dial up the high cooking temp and hit the woods! You’ll have a house that smells delicious and a great meal in about 4 to 5 hours. Davy Crockett Chicken is especially delectable if enjoyed on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturday, and Sundays when you can watch a football game from your recliner. If you make a ton of Davy Crockett Chicken like I do, you’ll be eating it until every NFL and college football game for the week has been played.
Just like with campfire stew, add or subtract ingredients to suit your taste buds. I won’t be sending the Cookbook Cops to your door if you add your own twist to this treat. So why is it called Davy Crockett Chicken?
Sorry, that will remain a family secret. However, I will share a famous Perry County deer hunting tactic that we share with the many hunters who flock to Southeast Ohio for a chance at a trophy buck…. Deer don’t “moo.”
