CAPTAINS LOG 41525: Bass #1 of the trip fell for a weightless Yamamoto Yamatunuki grub as I walked the marina shoreline shortly before the sun climbed over the Land Between the Lakes treeline. The 13 inch largemouth bass was tight to the flooded brush that normally would be a hiding spot for a rabbit instead of a fish.
After a Cracker Barrel breakfast in Calvert City, Mary and I pulled the Skeeter from the A9 boat slip around 10:15. Three hours spent fishing in the Moors Marina harbor produced eight more bass, the largest being a chunky 2 ½ pounder. The C.C. Shad crankbait tricked three bass while the rest preferred a blue black jig & pig. I call this C.C. Shad the “Mary bait” because she found it in the bargain box at Wal Mart. This little lure may not have the retail pedigree as many of the baits on the market today, but it is a bass catching tool.
During the time I was focusing on catching the next bass, Mary was reading an online recipe that involved shrimp, lemon, and lots of butter. We found the shrimp at another WalMart. Coupled with the salad Mary concocted, we had a gourmet dinner that doesn’t make an appearance my fishing trips with the guys.
Sunshine and temps in the high 60’s would have made a great combination to run the lake today, but that 30 mph north wind kept us in the marina. As well as the bass cooperated today, this fishing hole will receive more attention as the week progresses. If the wind is friendlier on Wednesday, we plan to hit the first creek arm south of Moors Resort and the cove behind the Moors Lodge. The lake is still flooded, the water is still muddy, but the bass are biting anyway.
First Fish, Kentucky Lake
The first fish of the adventure was caught as on the shore near the marina.
The Best Fish of the Day, Kentucky Lake
Day 2’s best fish was this largemouth bass that hit a jig & pig.
