MARBLEHEAD, OH — Thanks to an invitation from Bob and Pat Davis, Mary Kayser and I were able to make a two night stay at Little Ted’s Cottages located on Lake Erie’s East Harbor. Fishing, grilling, and dining out were our primary activities for two days.

Bob and Pat reserved a cottage at Little Ted’s for the first week in July. Although we missed the feast Bob prepared in his huge smoker on Friday, Mary and I put away enough calories for an entire week. Whether we were grilling hamburgers or dining at Big Bopper’s and Jolly Roger’s restaurants, the eating was as good as the fishing.

We concentrated on largemouth bass in and around East Harbor for the most part, but Bob and I fished the Middle Bass Shoal one morning. The shoal is located offshore between East and West Harbors. Surrounded by water 15 to 18 feet deep, the water depth on the boulder strewn shoal is in single digits.

Think buffet line when you picture Middle Bass Shoal. Every species of fish found in the Western Basin shows up at some point at Middle Bass Shoal. Bob and I caught largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, and one sheepshead in the brief time we spent on the shoal.

Perhaps the most special time was the lunch where Bob invited outdoor writing and media legend, D ‘Arcy Egan to join us at Big Bopper’s. D ‘Arcy wrote a column for the Cleveland Plain Dealer as well as hosting radio and TV shows in Northeast Ohio. D ‘Arcy was recently selected to the Ohio Bass Fishing Hall of Fame (OBFHOF) committee that just announced the inaugural class of ten individuals named to the OBFHOF.

The weather was great and so was the fishing for our two night stay. Bob and Pat Davis have been great friends for many years, but this was our first fishing getaway with them. We all agreed that such a good time with great friends requires an encore performance in the near future. If you are considering a group get together at the lake, Little Ted’s Cottages is a great place to stay. From boat docks to the swimming pool, the facility is ideal for a Lake Erie getaway.

Many thanks, Bob and Pat, for providing Mary and me the opportunity to enjoy a little lake life at my favorite fishing hole.
