GILBERTSVILLE, KY — Six April days at Kentucky Lake produced the kind of fishing fun that every angler loves. Warm sunshine had the fish biting whichever species anglers were pursuing. Crappie guys were returning to the marina at Moors Resort with good catches while shore anglers were landing a mixed bag of catfish, bass, and big bluegills.

Mary and I stayed at Moors Resort from April 15 until April 20, well before the summer crush of visitors descend upon this full service resort. From the clean accommodations to the first class restaurant to the marina’s covered boat slip, this place is perfect for anglers who enjoy comfort to go with their catch.

I fished primarily for largemouth bass, but sauger and smallmouth bass also made cameo appearances. A crankbait called the C.C. Shad and Ned rigs in the hot snakes color provided action early in the week for us. However, the two stars in the top bait categories were a pair of Yamamoto lures.

A wacky rigged Senko and a new bait called the Yamatanuki fished weightless provided great action. Top colors were baby bass and green pumpkin, but location was the key component for these baits. The classic Kentucky Lake pattern of “fishing the flowers” on the shorelines worked best for largemouth bass.

While I did not venture to mid-lake areas, anglers who did were successfully catching quality smallmouth bass. Most of these anglers were collegiate kids fishing a B.A.S.S. college tournament that launched from Paris Landing State Park just across the border in Tennessee. This event took place on Wednesday and Thursday while a Major League Fishing pro tournament took place that weekend.

Hope you enjoy the photo display. I call it “No Strangers on a Shoreline.” Rarely are names exchanged where fishermen meet, just stories about catches and the inevitable ones that got away. Our Kentucky Lake “friends” ranged from college kids to pro anglers to a group from Chicago who made fishing never look more fun.

Moors Resort is located on the western shore of Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky on 570 Moors Road. For Mary and I, that address could easily have been shortened to Paradise on the Water.
